ferryboatpeak[post-party smut that I haven’t had enough wine to write; pretend there’s a well-rendered sex scene here that Jack is going to remember every tender detail of, in pointed contrast to the barely remembered sloppy laughing abandon of the night they met]
Jack wakes up the next morning fitted around Harry’s back, conqueror of the pillow fort. He kisses the back of Harry’s neck and Harry stirs and starts the laborious process of turning over to face Jack, one limb at a time, pillow by pillow, culminating with hauling the bulk of his belly up and over. Morning-after happiness, blah blah blah. Eventually Jack gets up to make coffee and Harry goes to shower.
Jack’s surprised to see Harry emerge in sweatpants and his jacket a little while later, hair still towel-damp, with his plant-patterned pants and last night’s shirt wadded up under his arm. “I’m gonna take off,” he says, guarded, and Jack says he’ll drive him home, but Harry’s already got an uber on the way. When Jack makes a move toward him, Harry kind of flinches and puts his shoulder up and says something about how this probably wasn’t a good idea, and Jack’s too shocked and hurt to do anything but let Harry walk out.
He texts, again and again, and Harry doesn’t respond. Jack finally goes to his apartment. Zayn’s there, being protective of Harry, and so is Niall (which Jack is none too pleased about). Jack establishes that Harry's OK, the baby's OK, and then Harry finally tells Jack that there was no toothpaste Sunday morning so he was looking in the drawers in Jack's bathroom and guess what he found?
Oh, shit, the paternity test. “Barry bought that,” Jack says, automatically. “It’s not… I’m not…” Harry feels like Jack let him believe they were in this together, and all along he was just waiting to test their baby, like some kind of science project, god, what exactly was Jack going to do if it was negative, huh? They’d just never see him again? Jack tries to tell him that’s the last thing he wants, but Harry’s a mess of hormones who’s not particularly rational and Jack’s also pretty mad that he’s been trying his best at this whole thing but Harry’s willing to just walk away over this stupid paternity test that Jack should have thrown in the garbage as soon as he saw it. (Also it’s pretty hard to have this conversation in front of Niall and Zayn! Jack's maybe not being as open as he could be!)
Voices are raised, unfortunate things are said, and Niall tells Jack to leave. Jack tells Niall to stay the fuck out of this, which doesn’t help Jack’s case with anybody present. “He’s right,” Harry says, “you should go.”
“You can’t just…” walk out, Jack thinks, push me out, give up, whatever you’re doing. “We’re having a baby.”
“No,” Harry says, as Zayn gently but firmly nudges Jack toward the door. “Apparently I’m having a baby. Who knows what you’re doing.”
